Naturalists from Ponidzie have started works related to the restoration of unique riparian forests.

In total, in the area of several hectares of the Nida delta, near the Nature Education Center under construction, almost 6 thousand. new trees and shrubs.

Tomasz Hałatkiewicz, director of the Świętokrzyskie and Nadnidziańskie Landscape Parks Complex, emphasizes that riparian forests are a fantastic refuge for numerous bird species, e.g. white-tailed eagles.

These habitats are very fertile, rich in various species of plants and animals. These are both rare forest habitats, protected and most endangered in Europe, some of the most beautiful. We plant species characteristic of this type of habitat, including alder, white and black poplar, black and wild currant, guelder rose, elderberry, common euonymus and bird cherry – he lists.

Riparian forests are the Polish equivalent of wet, floodplain forests. They grow by rivers and streams that are flooded in spring and fertilized with fertile silt.

Dariusz Wiech, a specialist from the Świętokrzyskie and Nadnidziańskie Landscape Parks Complex, says that the main threat to riparian forests is human economic activity in the field of river drainage and regulation, which may lead to the complete disappearance of this unique ecosystem. The replacement of riparian species is to prevent the complete degradation of this habitat.

This is the richest type of tree stand and one of the most valuable areas in our area. This is our Ponidzie jungle. The area is flooded for part of the year. Various amphibians and reptiles live here – he adds.

The seedlings were grown e.g. at the forest nursery in Michałów, as well as at the headquarters of the Świętokrzyskie and Nadnidziańskie Landscape Parks Complex in Krzyżanowice. A hectare of young forest has already been planted within a week.

Zbigniew Koniusz, Voivode of Świętokrzyskie Province, also took part in the forest planting action.

Świętokrzyskie is an agricultural region. On the other hand, we aspire to make Ponidzie a high-level sanatorium and tourist base. I am glad that we care about the environment and, above all, we strive to restore the natural character of this place – he added.
