27 Aug We’ve examined the mud turtle’s e-DNA!
In the course of preparation for mud turtle’s (Emys orbicularis) reintroduction procedure. on our project site, we commissioned an analysis of the mud turtle’s environmental DNA. The research will be conducted by a specialist from the Faculty of Biology of the University of Warsaw, head of the Urwitałt field station — Grzegorz Górecki.
The procedure consists of three stages. The first one involves taking water samples from specially selected sites, stage II involves laboratory analysis of the samples, and the final stage is a report on the work done.
The results obtained will allow verifying the occurrence of this reptile in the LIFE4DELTA_PL project area. This is a very accurate and effective method to identify mud turtles and to eliminate the occurrence of invasive turtle species. The people who get rid of the red-bellied and yellow-bellied sliders by letting them go into the Nida river, threatening the native species of the mud turtle (Emys orbicularis), are still a huge problem.
