24 Sep Vertigo angustior
Did you know that the narrow-mouthed whorl snail (Vertigo angustior) is a tiny snail just a few millimeters long, and currently one of the rarest species not only in Poland but across Europe?
It inhabits wet meadows and peat bogs—habitats that are disappearing due to drainage, human activity, and climate change. Although it is becoming increasingly difficult to find in the Vistula Delta area, thanks to the efforts of experts from the Institute of Nature Conservation of the Polish Academy of Sciences, there is hope for restoring its population.
Its natural habitat is unique and extremely sensitive to change, which is why protecting these areas is so important.
Despite its inconspicuous appearance, this little snail plays a vital role in the ecosystem, and its presence serves as an indicator of the health and quality of the environment it lives in.
The species is listed in Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive. According to the IUCN Red List, it is classified as Near Threatened (NT). In Poland, it is under strict species protection.
