Echo Dnia about our project

The employees of the Świętokrzyskie and Nadnidziańskie Landscape Parks Complex in Pińczów Forest District built a platform for white-tailed eagles on a tree. They hope that these mighty birds will build a nest on it.

In the riparian forest complex in Pińczów Forest District, on an old alder, at a height of 20 meters, a special platform for white-tailed eagles was built. It is 120 centimeters in diameter. Naturalists hope that white-tailed eagles will nest there. The project is part of the LIFE program “Renaturation of the inland delta of the Nida River”, which is implemented by the Świętokrzyskie and Nadnidziańskie Landscape Parks Complex together with  Pińczów Forest District, and the Institute of Nature Conservation of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow and the University of Agriculture in Krakow.

“Młodzawy” is a complex of riparian forests measuring 120 hectares, the largest in this part of the Nida valley. White-tailed eagles have been observed there more than once, naturalists hope that they will use the platform to build a nest. If white-tailed eagles settle in this area, a special protection zone will be created around it so as not to disturb the peace of the birds. In the area of the Regional Directorate of State Forests in Radom, 57 such zones have been designated so far, including 13 for the white-tailed eagle.

According to the ornithologist Łukasz Misiuna, several pairs of these predators breed in the Świętokrzyskie region. It is more common to see them in flight.

White-tailed eagles are powerful birds of prey with a wingspan of about two meters. Their name is related to the fact that in adults the tail is snow-white, and the feathers on the head are lighter than on the rest of the body. They hunt mainly fish, though they also hunt waterfowl and do not despise carrion. There have been more and more white-tailed eagles in Poland in the last few decades. In the 1950s, the number of pairs was estimated at around 50, now there may be around 1,000 pairs. The white-tailed eagle is considered to be the prototype of Poland’s national emblem. It is a protected species.
