International Turtle Day

World Turtle Day is a holiday aimed at drawing attention to the need for protection and conservation of this fascinating species. The pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) is a characteristic species of Central and Southern Europe, including Poland. This is one of the oldest species of turtles in the world, with its origins dating back millions of years, making it a true living treasure of natural heritage.
Mud turtles have adapted well to living in wetland habitats. They are also excellent swimmers and divers, skillfully regulating their metabolism and oxygen consumption, which allows them to stay underwater for longer periods of time.
The main threats to pond turtles come from habitat loss and inadequate management of water resources. Therefore, it is important to take measures to protect and restore wetlands and reduce the negative impact of river regulation and wetland drainage.
By caring for their habitat and taking measures for the survival of this species, we create a great opportunity for mud turtles to enjoy us for many generations to come
