Plant a riparian forest.

Plant a riparian forest.

At the beginning of April, riparian forest restoration activities were once again launched in the Nida River Delta as part of the LIFE4DELTA project.

In order for all work to proceed smoothly and efficiently, the areas for planting were properly prepared. More than a hundred planting strips were made on an area of more than 1 hectare, in which LIFE project staff together with employees of the ZŚiNPK in Kielce planted about 1,000 pieces of black alder. In the next few days, it is planned to plant the area also with white poplar, various species of willows and biocenotic species that improve the foraging base for game, i.e. elderberry, guelder rose, common spindle and black currant. The species listed come from the local shrub nursery located on the Michalow Nursery Farm.  Riparian forests are a sanctuary of enormous species diversity and at the same time are the most endangered forest communities.

The lowering of groundwater levels and the resulting drying of the land is resulting in changes in the riparian flora and fauna, leading to the disappearance of these unique habitats. Given the current pace of the country’s development and the progress of agriculture, in a few decades the riparian forests may completely disappear from the surface of Poland. Therefore, the restoration activities undertaken under the LIFE4DELTA project contribute to the restoration and preservation of these valuable communities in the Nida River valley
