Renaturalization of the Nida River with a multi-million support

The destroyed nature will be brought back to life, the oxbow lake of the Nida will once again be filled with unique species of birds, amphibians and fish. Over 23 million zlotys will be used for this purpose — Radio eM Kielce reports about the start of our project.

The inland delta of the Nida River near Umianowice, in the Kije Commune, is one of the richest natural areas in Europe, and as a result of faulty land development works carried out in the 1980s and 1990s, it was significantly damaged. The Świętokrzyskie and the Nida River Landscape Park in Kielce, together with the Institute of Nature Conservation of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Pińczów Forest Inspectorate and the University of Agriculture in Kraków, are implementing an EU project to restore the former state of affairs.

— This year we are preparing ourselves for this task, buying equipment and finishing the recruitment process. The main renaturalization works will start next year. Various animal species will be restored in this area, including the crested newt, fire-bellied toad and pond turtle — Wojciech Sołtysiak, the manager of the “Renaturyzacja śródlądowej delty rzeki Nidy” (Eng. Renaturalization of the inland delta of the Nida River) project said. — The most difficult task will be to restore the hydrological regime, if there is a drought, we will not able to do anything — the specialist added.
Apart from restoring unique natural conditions, the project also aims at restitution of cow grazing that have not occurred in the area for several dozen years. This will ensure that natural habitats are maintained in good condition and at the same time that new jobs are created.

— The Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship will be the beneficiary coordinating the programme. I think that good cooperation will bring results and the oxbow lake of the Nida will look like it did in the 60s or 70s, before the processes that lead to the degradation of this beautiful place — Andrzej Bętkowski, Marshal of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, stressed.
