It is one of the most beautiful and mysterious amphibians, whose ancestors lived 40 million years ago. Crested newts found their habitat, among others, on Ponidzie.
As Dariusz Wiech, a specialist from the Świętokrzyskie and Nadnidziadzkie Landscape Parks Complex, says, it is an aquatic/land animal. In our country there are two varieties: the crested newt and the common newt.

– The name of the crested newt comes from the characteristic skin fold along its neck in the shape of a crest. This fold appears in males during the mating season. The crest not only lures the female, but also helps to breathe under water, he points out.
As he adds, the crested newt is a species under strict protection. As its population is decreasing, it has been decided to take care of its breeding. For this purpose, two containers were purchased in which there are special aquariums and containers for their reproduction.
– Our newts are getting ready to sleep. In the aquariums, they have their holes between the pebbles. When they wake up in spring, they will be systematically released around Nida – he adds.

They can be found in meadows, pastures as well as in forests, especially in willow, poplar, alder, and ash riparian forests.
Newts are another species, after turtles and fire-bellied toads, whose populations in the backwaters of Nida the Świętokrzyskie and Nadnidziańskie Landscape Parks Complex wants to enlarge.
