The storks will arrive in Poland any minute now. Naturalists ask for monitoring of birds

About 45,000 stork pairs arrive in Poland every year. They will be here any day now. That’s why the Team of Świętokrzyskie and Nadnidziańskie Landscape Parks urges people to look out for birds. The date of their arrival, but also other information will serve naturalists to better understand the habits of these birds.

These are the final touches, as the storks are expected to arrive any minute now.

“Following the proverb on St. Joseph – his birds are arriving, and it’s tomorrow, that is March 19,” stated Marcin Słoma, an ornithologist from the Complex of Świętokrzyskie Landscape Parks.

Naturalists from the Complex of Świętokrzyskie and Nadnidziańskie Landscape Parks are pruning willow branches to make the nest more easily accessible. Not only its location, but also its sustainability matters. The storks choose the best ones. The first-come, first-served principle applies.

“Only the males arrive and attract the females. The ones with the largest locale, those have the best chance of forming a pair,” explains Marcin Słoma.

In an effort to learn more about storks, the team of Świętokrzyskie and Nadnidziańskie Landscape Parks encourages young ornithologists and nature lovers to observe these birds.

Monitoring can be done by anyone who lives near the nests. The form for keeping records can be found on the LIFE 4 Delta program website.

“We observe the storks from their arrival, then how many eggs they have, how many young there are,” says Robert Pisarczyk of the Complex of Świętokrzyskie and Nadnidziańskie Landscape Parks.

The program will end in September, when the birds are getting ready to fly away. The collected materials will be used by researchers to better understand the habits and problems of storks.
