Longing for the old Nida

Longing for the old Nida

In Umianowice, in the Pińczów Poviat, scientists and naturalists have begun saving the unique delta of the Nida. It is one of three projects on a national scale, co-financed from the EU programme funding activities aimed at the protection of the natural environment. The project in Świętokrzyskie is unique throughout Europe as well, as it involves recreating the plant and animal world, which are often completely alien to foreign tourists — as the website of Radio Kielce describes our project.

Professor Tadeusz Zając from the Institute of Nature Conservation of the Polish Academy of Sciences claims that Poland is in an excellent ecological condition in comparison to a number of western countries. When the scientist was showing tourists around the Nida area, they were delighted. The beauty of the landscape is particularly impressive. The uniqueness of the place is evidenced, among others, by the varied terrain, the river, as well as the vegetation and animals that unique to the area. The professor adds that foreign tourists find the birds singing and frogs croaking exotic.

— During the works, particular emphasis will be placed on recreating the animal world, which was extremely rich several decades ago — project manager Wojciech Sołtysiak says.

The rare species of animals will return. These include snails from the lesser ramshorn species, amphibians such as crested newt and fire-bellied toad, or the pond turtle, an abundance of could have been found in the delta 30 years ago. There’s almost none left today.
